The inquiry includes 4.3 lakh units of Harley bikes from across the country that were manufactured between 2008 to 2011 and feature Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS).
The complaints say that the brakes of HD motorcycles equipped with ABS failed without any warning.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States has launched an investigation into Harley-Davidson after receiving 43 complaints of the braking system on the motorcycles failed without warning. The body has received 43 complaints of brakes getting completely failed, even without any prior warning. Riders complained that the front brake hand lever or the rear brake foot pedal suddenly would not work. At least three crashes and two injuries were reported due to the sudden brake failure, while numerous riders mentioned in their complaints that major accidents were narrowly avoided.
NHTSA has received 43 complaints so far
In 2014, Harley Davidson issued a brakes related recall. Whether the issue is prevalent in its bikes sold outside of America is yet not clear, however, taking a preventive maintenance action of replacing the brake fluid after its service life limit should keep one away from getting into such troubles. Harley-Davidson has argued that the sudden loss in braking could be the result of customers ignoring the 2-year brake fluid replacement schedule.
The agency said it is possible that some riders who experienced brake failure did not change the motorcycle's brake fluid every two years as recommended by Harley-Davidson. In an email statement to Fortune, Harley Davidson said that it is aware of the investigation and is cooperating with NHTSA.
